Flood situation worsens in northern regions

More areas in the country's northeastern districts of Netrakona, Sunamganj and Sylhet were inundated Wednesday as the main rivers in the region continued to swell, leaving thousands of families marooned afresh, report agencies.
A bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said new areas in Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur and Shariatpur districts, and Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas of Dhaka are likely to be inundated.
It said more low-lying areas in the eastern part of Dhaka city is likely to be inundated.
The FFWC, however, said the flood situation in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Rangpur and Bogra is likely to start improving by the next 24 hours, but the situation in the districts of Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Pabna and Tangail is still deteriorating and expected to start improving within the next 2-3 days.
The bulletin also said most rivers in the Brahmaputra, Ganges and the Meghna basins registered rise while the rivers in the South Eastern hill basin marked both rise and fall. Water levels in the rivers registered rise at 47 stations while fall in 14 stations.
The Brahmaputra and Jamuna receded further at the upstream (Noonkhawa, Chilmari and Bahadurabad) points while it continued to rise at the downstream points (Sirajganj and Aricha) and were flowing 50 cm, 71 cm, 83 cm, 117 cm and 112 cm above the danger level at
