Flooding worsens in some dists, static elsewhere

RANGPUR, Sept 4 (BSS): The flood situation deteriorated further following continuous onrush of water from upper catchments in 24 hours until 6:00 am on Friday marooning over 350 thousand (3.5 lakh) people in the Brahmaputra basin.
According to sources with the district administrations concerned and the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), water levels in major rivers marked sharp rise at most places with the rivers flowing above the danger marks at several points in the river basin.
The situation deteriorated in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Bogra, Sirajganj and Jamalpur while it remained mostly static in Rangpur and Nilphamari districts during the period.
The Deputy Commissioners, UNOs, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officers (DRRO), officials of BWDB, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and public representatives were monitoring the situation closely in affected areas and intensified relief activities.
Officials of the BWDB were working round the clock and keeping vigil to protect the flood control embankments from damage as the major rivers were still flowing above their respective danger marks at several points.
Officials at the DAE offices feared more crop losses following inundation of standing crops anew on vast low-lying areas for the second time within a gap of less than one week in the river basin.
According to sources in the district administrations, public representatives and local people, over 350 thousand (3.5 lakh) people were affected by floodwater and sporadic land erosion continued along riverside areas at places in the affected districts.
Many marooned people took shelters on highlands, flood control embankments, educational and other institutions and the district and upazila administrations were conducting relief activities in the affected areas.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officers Abdul Mottalib of Kurigram and Habibur Rahman of Gaibandha said many people were affected by floodwaters in the low-lying and char villages in these districts. The district administrations already allocated rice and cash money and the upazila administrations with assistance of local public representatives were distributing the same among the flood-affected people, they said. Similar reports of allocation and distribution of rice were received from the other flood-affected districts of Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Bogra and Sirajganj districts along the Brahmaputra basin.
