FENI, May 20 (UNB): Fulgazi Upazila chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram was shot and burnt to death by miscreants in Academy area of the district town (today) Tuesday.
Police said Ekram, an Awami League-backed UZ chairman, came under attack by the miscreants, numbering 20-30, on his way to the Upazila headquarters in his car from his Masterpara residence at 11:00 am.
Mohibubullah Farhad, executive editor of the daily 'Feni Protidin' owned by Ekram, ex-Fulgazi Union Parishad chairman Sambu and another person, Hossain Ali, were also in the car during the attack.
The miscreants swooped on the vehicle near Bilashi movie house in the area at about 11:10am and fired several bullets at the vehicles, leaving Ekram injured critically.
The attackers vandalised the car with sticks and later torched it.
All the car passengers except Ekram, who sustained injuries with bullets, managed to come out.
Later, police recovered the chairman's charred body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The attackers also beat up the chairman's associates, leaving them injured.
Expressing her resentment and condemning the brutal killing of Fulgazi Upazila chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram, Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina Tuesday asked the law enforcing agencies to arrest the culprits.
In a statement, signed by PM's special assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil, the PM said Ekramul was a very popular young leader. He was dedicated to making Fugazi into a modern upazila.
She said the evil forces against the spirit of independence and liberation war, who wanted to weaken the Awami League organizationally through killing and terrorism, might have killed Ekram.
Hasina urged the people of Fulgazi, nay the whole country, to beware of such brutal killing.
She prayed for the departed soul and expressed her sympathy to the bereaved family members of the deceased.
The government would take all measures to give appropriate punishment to the killers, the Prime Minister assured.
