A Bangladesh Bank (BB) official was gunned down by gangsters in a raid on his home in Dhamrai municipal area amid heavy rain early Sunday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Hedayetullah (52), deputy general manager (Offside and Supervision) of the central bank.
Family sources said a gang of masked goons, numbering eight, broke into a room where his daughter and son-in-law were sleeping at about 4.00 am. They locked all the family members, excepting Heayetullah, in a room and held his grandson Masrur hostage.
The Bangladesh Bank Deputy General Manager (DGM) woke up when the hooligans entered his room. "As he shouted and tried to resist the gangsters, they shot pointblank into his left eye," said a report quoting witnesses.
The assailants fled sharp after shooting down Hedayetullah. Doctors declared him dead when he was taken to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex.
Police seized from the scene a grill-cutter, three sharp weapons and a wristwatch left behind by the assailants.
There was nothing looted by them in the predawn attack on his house at Bijoynagar in the municipal area, one of a number of felonies involving such sensational murders in and around the capital of late.
On information, the police visited the scene and sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.
Assistant Police Super of Savar Circle Alhaj Matiur Rahman told journalists preliminary investigations indicated that "the terrorists stormed into the house only to kill" Hedayetullah.
Family members, however, said that it was an incident of dacoity.
His first namaz-e-janaza was held on the BB premises in the city at 4.00 pm where BB Governor Salehuddin Ahmed and officials and employees of the central bank were present.
His second namaz-e-janaza was held at Jatrabari in Dhamrai poura area. The third and last janaza took place at his village home at Tentulia in Dhamrai.
After the funerals, Hedayetullah was buried at Jannatul Baki graveyard.
A case was filed in connection with the killing.
Meanwhile, BB Governor Salehuddin Ahmed Sunday expressed his deep shocked at the sad demise of Md Hedayet Ullah.
Describing Hedayet Ullah as an honest and talent officer, the governor said, "I on behalf of myself and the Bangladesh Bank express deep condolence to the members of the bereaved family of the deceased."
He prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul of Hedayet Ullah.
