FE Report
At least 20 people, including five policemen, were injured as garment workers clashed with the law enforcers Friday at Ashulia industrial belt, on the outskirt of the capital.
Authorities of 30 garment factories located on both sides of Dhaka-Aricha road suspended production in their units for the day in the face of workers' unrest.
Witnesses said thousands of workers of Tex Town garment factory at Kathgora became unruly after they found the gate of their workplace closed in the morning and resorted to vandalism, damaging a number of factories.
The factory management said they closed the unit as the workers had vandalised and set fire to a portion of the factory Thursday.
The workers have been demonstrating for the last couple of days, as the authorities of the factory did not pay their salaries despite giving repeated assurance to clear the dues, the agitators said.
The factory management was supposed to clear the salaries on March 7.
The angry workers also demanded resignation of its general manager, Lokman Hossain, immediately. They gave the manager tremendous thrashing which prompted law enforcers to fire 20 rounds of rubber bullet, leaving at least 20 people injured.
The injured persons were taken to nearby clinics for treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Ashulia police station Sirajul Islam said they had to fire rubber bullets to maintain law and order situation in the area. "Five policemen were also injured in the skirmish," he added.
Security has also been stepped up at the industrial hub to thwart any further trouble.
