War crimes convict and ex-Jamaat ameer Ghulam Azam was buried on Saturday after his namaz-e-janaza at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the city, reports UNB.

The Jamaat guru was buried beside his father at his family graveyard at the city's Moghbazar around 3:30pm.

Earlier, his namaz-e-janaza was held after Zohar prayers around 1:50 pm at the national mosque amid tight security. His son Abdullahil Amaan Azmi led the janaza.

Senior Jamaat leaders, including its acting ameer Mokbul Hossain and acting general secretary Dr Shafiqur Rahman, attended the janaza.

Some Jamaat leaders and his fourth son Abdullahil Amaan Azmi briefly addressed the gathering before the janaza. "Ghulam Azam will be properly evaluated if Islam turns victorious in this country," he said.

He further said, "To the best of my knowledge, Ghulam Azam didn't do anything to hurt anyone. Nevertheless, if anyone got hurt with his remarks, behaviour and activities, you please forgive my father. I humbly seek apology to the country's people. "

Earlier, his body was taken to Baitul Mukarram in a mortuary vehicle from his Moghbazar house around 1pm.

However, Ghulam Azam's five sons-Abdullahil Mamun Al-Azmi, Abdullahil Amin Azmi, Abdullahil Momen Azmi, Abdullahil Noman Al-Azmi and Abdullahil Salman Al-Azmi-who live abroad could not join their father's janaza as they could not return home.

A large number of activists of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir joined the janaza. But, no leader of BNP and its associate bodies joined it as the party remained silent over his death.

Ghulam Azam who was sentenced to 90 years' imprisonment unto death for masterminding atrocities during the Liberation War in 1971 died at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Thursday night at the age of 92. His body was handed over to his family early Friday after post-mortem. Later, it was kept in a mortuary vehicle at his residence.

The government took tight security measures around the Baitul Mukarram Mosque following the threats of some pro-government bodies to resist Ghulam Azam's janaza at the national mosque.

Ghulam Azam had been locked at the BSMMU prison cell since January11, 2012.

On July 15, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 awarded Ghulam Azam 90 years' jail term unto death for abetting atrocities during the war of independence against Pakistan.
