Govt approves 2 LNG cargo procurement from UK

The government on Wednesday approved the procurement of two cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United Kingdom to weather the energy crisis in Bangladesh amid the Gulf tension.
It also endorsed five separate procurement proposals, including 10 million litres of refined palm oil, 30,000 metric tonnes of fertilisers, building buffer godown, Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) vaccines, and SPC poles, to meet the growing demand in the country.
The approvals came at the 11th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) this year held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.
The meeting reviewed a total of six proposals submitted by the Ministry of Commerce, Energy and Mineral Resources Division, Health Services Division, Ministry of Industries, and Power Division.
The committee approved the purchase of two cargoes of LNG from the international spot market to meet the country's growing energy demand.
The cargoes will be purchased from TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd at nearly Tk 8.334 billion per cargo.
The total cost will be over Tk 16.66 billion.
The unit price of the LNG was fixed at $19.77 per MMBtu.
In a move to control the kitchen market, the Ministry of Commerce endorsed the procurement of 10 million litres of refined palm oil from Shabnam Vegetable Oil Industries Limited.
The price of the oil was fixed at Tk 163.48 per litre, with the total cost standing at Tk 1.635 billion.

The division will purchase the vaccines from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) through a direct procurement method (DPM) at Tk 6.04 billion.
The procurement will be facilitated through advance payment to UNICEF to ensure an uninterrupted supply of life-saving vaccines for children.
To ensure a steady supply of fertilisers for farmers, the Ministry of Industries received the approval for two major fertiliser-related procurements, including 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea from KAFCO, Bangladesh at a cost of Tk 1.754 billion.
The unit price is $476.375 per metric tonne.
Constructing a warehouse in Chuadanga under the 30 Buffer Godown Construction project to improve fertiliser storage and distribution was also endorsed at the meeting.
The project, awarded to SS Rahman International Ltd, will cost Tk 432.8 million.
The Power Division secured approval for the procurement of SPC poles to modernise and strengthen the electricity distribution system in Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.
A joint venture, including Dada Engineering Ltd, Contech Construction Ltd, TSCO Power Ltd, and Pasha Poles Ltd, will supply the poles at Tk 2.30 billion.
