Govt 'fails', NCP will issue July Charter, says Nahid

36 days of events to mark one year of July Uprising

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam says the government has failed to announce the July Charter, reports bdnews24.com.
The party will issue the July Charter itself on Aug 3 alongside the students and the public, he added.
Nahid made the remarks on Sunday while announcing 36 days of events to mark the one-year anniversary of the July Uprising.
The programme was announced at a press conference at the party's office in Bangla Motor.
Nahid said, "The government took the responsibility of issuing the July Charter, and the government was supposed to issue it within 30 working days. But they have not taken the initiative.
"Since the government said it would issue it (the charter) on the basis of consensus with everyone, it did not happen; the government has failed. Therefore, the July Charter will be read out on the 3rd of August along with the students and the public."
On Jun 6, the NCP leader Nahid had told Ekattor Television: "Since a possible month for the elections has been announced, if the July Charter is ready by July and the July Declaration is made within the promised time, then I applaud the date (election in the first half of April)."
National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Ali Riaz said on Sunday that doubts have arisen about the announcement of the July Charter on the death anniversary of Abu Sayed, a martyr of the July Movement. However, the commission says it is optimistic about the announcement of such a charter within July.
Stating that the demand for incorporating the July Declaration into the Constitution will also be raised, Nahid said on Sunday that the NCP's manifesto will also be announced on that day.
The NCP's 36-day programme includes a nationwide "July March" on Jul 1, a "July Declaration" on Aug 3, and reading of the party's manifesto. It will also observe "Anti-discrimination Martyrs' Day" in memory of Abu Sayed on July 16, and celebrate the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5 as the liberation day of the students and the people.
Nahid Islam said, "The desire to build a new Bangladesh that developed after the fall of the Awami League government in an uprising by the students and the people must be remembered in July. It is everyone's responsibility to remember the 36 days of July and August."
Nahid also commented that the NCP has a greater responsibility to maintain the ideals of the July Uprising.
