August 28, 2007 00:00:00

The government totally withdrew the curfew clamped on six divisional cities, including Dhaka, amid campus violence as law-and-order situation has now improved.
"Curfew has been completely lifted as law-and-order situation improved following all-out efforts of law- enforcing agencies and cooperation of the people," said an official announcement on Monday night.
There was prior announcement of a relaxed curfew from midnight on Monday night until 5.0am Tuesday. But, following the latest government decision, there won't be any curfew anymore.
In the wake of unprecedented student unrest across the country following August 20 military-student brawl on Dhaka University campus, the government enforced indefinite curfew on capital Dhaka and divisional headquarters from 8.0pm Wednesday.
A government press note Monday night said the curfew was imposed on all the divisional cities, including Dhaka, on August 22 in the wake of untoward incidents on August 20 and the following days.
"The law-and-order situation has now been improved by all- out efforts of the law-enforcing agencies and sincere support and cooperation of the countrymen," it said.
Legal actions are being taken against creators of instability and chaos through identifying them. "The government will take proper steps against activities contrary to existing laws and discipline in order to protect life and property of people in the future," it stated.
The government also sought cordial cooperation from peace- loving people of the country for the interest of maintaining overall situation stable.
During the three-day-long violence since August 20, which spread fast to some parts of the country, left one rickshawpuller dead in Rajshahi and hundreds of students, policemen and people injured.
A number of vehicles and shops were set on fire and damaged as well as some police boxes in the city were burnt and vandalised during the violent protests.
On August 22, alongside imposing curfew, the military-backed interim regime shut down sine die all the universities and colleges in the six divisional cities and asked the students to vacate their dormitories before the curfew hours to quell the fast-spreading violent student protests.
