FE Report
The government has taken a move to allow duty-free import of some perishable commodities under the 'Operation Nityapannaya-2007' (Operation Essential Commodities-2007) programme of Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP).
The Ansar and VDP recently requested the government to allow duty-free import of aubergine, green pepper, tomato and cucumber, the widely consumed vegetables in the holy month of Ramadan.
They requested the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to waive the duty until October 31 on import of such products through Bhomra land port.
The government has initiated a number of efforts to rein in the prices of essential commodities during Ramadan period.
The Ansar and VDP personnel have been operating the programme since August 14 last to keep the prices of essentials at a tolerable level.
They are selling rice and other essentials in 10 city centres under the programme.
The Bangladesh Riles (BDR) has also been operating several outlets of essential commodities to keep the market price steady.
