FE Report
The government will seek financial support from donors to overcome shocks of the global economic meltdown at a meeting of the forum of development partners today (Thursday) in Dhaka, officials said Wednesday.
A senior finance ministry official said two top ministers will attend the meeting to explain the situation arising out of economic recession, suggest priority projects for donors' support and highlight the vision of the newly elected government.
"Finance and planning ministers will brief them about the government's priority areas, election manifesto and its vision. They will ask for donors' support to fulfill the vision of the government," economic relations division (ERD) secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told the FE.
Under the banner of the local consultative group (LCG), the donors might place their plan on how they could help Bangladesh, he said.
Major development partners including World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Japan, British donor agency Department for International Development (DFID), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other donors working in Bangladesh will participate in the meeting.
"As the global recession has already started affecting the country's export sector, seeking support of the development partners to overcome the impact will be an important point of discussion at tomorrow's meeting," Mr. Bhuiyan said.
The country's exports of items like ready-made garments (RMG), frozen food, leather and yarn are showing downward trends.
