Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday said her government wants to run industrial units under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) as this process has worked effectively during the recent global economic meltdown, reports UNB.
"This is not possible to run all industries and mills by the government alone, we want to run industries and mills under PPP," she said at a function marking the 41st founding anniversary of Jatiya Sramik League at her official residence Ganabhaban Tuesday morning.
Jatiya Sramik League president Master Matin and general secretary Roy Ramesh Chandra also spoke at the function.
Hasina said the recent economic crisis also proved that the private sector alone is not also capable to run the economy of a country and develop it.
She said, "the economy will run in right direction when the public sector will be there in a competitive position and we are taking steps towards that direction."
The Prime Minister also criticised the attitude of workers and officials of the state-run industries and mills. "Often it was seen that the workers and officials are very much callous to their duties. This happened because they know that their jobs are secured and they don't need to work. They will get their salaries and wages at the end of the month," she said.
Hasina alleged the previous government did not look after the state-run mills properly. She said when private mills and industries are running well at that time why the government run mills and industries will incur loss.
She said the present government has taken initiatives to re-open two-state run jute mills that were closed by the BNP-led alliance government.
The two jute mills are Quwami Jute Mills in Sirajganj and Peoples Jute Mills in Khulna. She said five other jute mills are on the list for reopening.
Criticising the BNP-Jamaat regime for indiscriminately privatising the state run mills and industries, Hasina said, "I don't understand why the BNP-Jamaat government was so angry with jute. They sold out these mills at a very lower price," she said.
Hasina said her government is working relentlessly to protect the interests of the workers in line with ILO convention maintaining congenial relation between workers and owners.
