Severe traffic gridlock slowed the movement of vehicles in the city on Sunday forcing many passengers to get down and start for their respective destinations on foot.
Vehicles moved inch by inch towards their destinations on almost all the roads across the capital.
According to the traffic control section of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the situation turned worst on the key city roads, including
Mirpur-New Market Road, Manik Mia Avenue-Farmgate, Banani-Farmgate via PMO (Prime Minister's Office), Rampura-Malibag, Satraasta-Mouchak via Mogbazar and Gulshan.
Talking to the FE, government employee Meer Mustafizur Rahman said he spent more than two hours to reach Motijheel from Gabtoli, which usually takes 45 minutes.
"The problem is very common here, but unfortunately nobody tries to solve it in a concerted way," he said.
Talking about the issue, DMP Joint Commissioner (traffic) Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said an increased number of people were going outdoors for different purposes including going to office, doing business and shopping during the month of Ramadan extra pressure on roads.
"Many people are also gathering at city shopping malls and roadside shops for Eid shopping with cars. Most of the areas lack adequate parking facilities, prompting the shoppers to park their vehicles illegally blocking the roads," he said.
However, the city-dwellers were enjoying unusually-free roads immediately before or after Iftar time every day. People can reach any destination easily through the free roads until around 7.45 pm.
Traffic congestions in the capital took the serious turn as the movement of people and vehicles intensified ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
Commuters said an increased number of rickshaws and crowded roadside shops intensified the problem in the recent days.
