Guardians oblivious of virus scare

FE REPORT | April 03, 2021 00:00:00

Admission test for MBBS course for the 2020-2021 academic year was held on Friday, with guardians scrambling outside exam centres defying health guideline amid the rapid spread of coronavirus.

Exam venues and their precincts were packed with the candidates' guardians and near ones as there was no tangible measure to ensure social distancing there.

However, adequate measures were taken inside the centres.

The hour-long admission test began at 10:00 am. Candidates along with their guardians started crowding the centres two to three hours before.

Most of the people were seen wearing facemasks, but social distancing was hardly maintained, said a guardian outside the Udayan School centre at Dhaka University.

Only a handful of security personnel cannot ensure social distancing as guardians were more concerned about their candidates than the spread of Covid-19.

As many as 1,22,874 candidates were scheduled to take the placement test at 55 venues under 19 centres.

There are 4,650 seats at 47 public medical colleges and 8,340 at the private ones.

The authority could not arrange the test for the 2020-2021 session last year due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The government decided to hold the test and issued a circular on February 08 against the backdrop of an improved pandemic situation in the country.
