Gun attack kills five on way to slain chairman’s funeral

RANGAMATI, May 4 (UNB): Five people were killed and eight others injured in a gun attack on a motorcade of the followers of slain Naniarchar upazila council chairman Shaktiman Chakma at Betchhari in the upazila on Friday.

They came under the attack while going to attend the funeral of the slain upazila chairman at his Kukurmara family crematory in the upazila from Khagrachhari.

The deceased were identified as Tapan Jyoti Chakma alias Borma, chief of United People's Democratic Front (Ganotantrik); Tanak Chakma, central committee member of Jubo Samity; Sujon Chakma, president of Mahalchhari upazila Jubo Samity in Khagrachhari; Setulal Chakma and microbus driver Md Sajib.

Md Alamgir Kabir, superintendent of Rangamati police, said a group of unknown miscreants attacked the convoy around 11am after had reached Betchhari, 9 km off Kukurmara, and opened fire indiscriminately, leaving three dead on the spot and 10 injured with bullets.

Two of the injured died at hospital.

Four of the injured were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital while others were undergoing treatment at Khagrachhari Hospital.

Plying of all modes of vehicles remained suspended on the Khagrachhari-Rangamati road after the incident.

Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, 55, chairman of Naniarchar upazila council and leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila council complex on Thursday.
