BNP acting secretary general Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmad Saturday dismissed the report that chairperson Khaleda Zia had rejected the new committee headed by Saifur Rahman, reports UNB. "She (Khaleda) is in prison and has no scope of discussing politics with visitors in presence of jail authorities," Hafiz told newsmen when his attention was drawn to a report published in a section of the press attributing to a relative who met her in jail.
Jail authority also issued a statement refuting the claim. "Those issuing such statements are parasites trying to survive in politics holding the straw," he added.
Hafiz reiterated his allegiance to the leadership of Khaleda Zia. He said certain BNP leaders were issuing misleading statements to confuse the people and damage the party.
"I'll be the first man to oppose any proposal to drop Khaleda from the post of BNP chairperson," he said replying to a question. He hastened to add: However, the reforms committee of the party would finalise the matter.
