Haor farmers alerted to risk from rainfall

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has advised farmers to harvest their boro paddy after 80 per cent of ripening in the haor region to save the crop amid the potential risk from heavy rainfall, reports BSS.
The DAE came up with the advisory in an emergency notification sent to the media on Sunday.
According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many places in north-east haor region of Bangladesh (Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria and Netrakona) from May 3 next.
In such a situation, the following suggestions have been given to the famers to save mature crops from the adverse impacts of heavy rainfall in the haor region:
1. When boro paddy ripens 80 per cent, collect those quickly and keep in a safe and dry place.
2. Harvest vegetables that become mature.
3. Keep the drains clean so that rainwater does not accumulate in the paddy field.
4. Raise the boundary line of cropland.
5. Take measures to remove excess water from cropland.
6. Avoid using of irrigation, fertilizers and pesticides.
7. Use insecticide after rainfall.
8. Arrange poles for bananas and other horticultural crops and vegetables.
