Haphazard car parking creates huge traffic snarl

Hundreds of cars remain illegally parked at the country's business hub of Motijheel, Dilkhusha and Paltan in violation of rules.

The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) suspended leasing out spaces for parking in front of the commercial buildings along the road two years back to address the chronic traffic congestion in the areas.

The indiscriminate parking of cars has been going on despite building of a multi-storey car parking facility.

DCC sources said around 30 per cent of the two-lane 100 feet road remain occupied by cars.

Even some people have marked spaces for their cars on the roadside.

Dilip Kumar Sharma, general manger (GM) of Samabaya Bank told the FE that he had been using space marked for his car since his joining the bank on deputation from Public Administration Training Centre in April in 2007.

"I don't pay any body for the space. I have inherited it," he said.

On the other hand, the multi-storey car parking facility, built by Shadharan Bima Corporation (SBC), remains underutilised.

Sirajul Islam, urban planner of the DCC, told the FE that it had stopped leasing out spaces on the roads for car parking since 2006.

"We know there are hundreds of cars parking illegally at the Motijheel, Dilkhusha area, but we are not taking any action as the SBC had pledged to stop such practice after inauguration of its large car parking facility at the Dilkhusha area," Mr Serajul told the FE.

"We have refrained from leasing out road spaces for parking since 2006 in the city excepting 15 car spaces for a daily newspaper," he added.

However, officials at the SBC said it had reduced rent for parking in the building, which has capacity for 545 cars.

"We have cut rent for car parking by 25 per cent from June 1 to encourage people to park their cars at the facility that provides close-circuit camera.

Hasnat Mosharrof, an assistant manager of the SDC, said more than 50 per cent of the parking area remains unutilised.

SBC constructed the car parking facility at a cost of Tk 300 million on two bighas of land at Dilkhusha.
