Awami League president Sheikh Hasina Thursday said that the general election should be held on December 18 with the participation of all political parties, reports UNB.
"Sheikh Hasina thinks the general election should be held on December 18. She also expects all parties will participate in the polls for people to cast votes in a pleasant environment," said former ambassador Mohammad Zamir who was present at an hour-long meeting between Hasina and French Ambassador Charley Causeret at Sudha Sadan in the city.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, Zamir said, as France is the current president of the European Council, various matters of Bangladesh's interest were discussed with importance in the meeting.
He said the French ambassador had assured Sheikh Hasina of continuing his government's assistance for rapid development of Bangladesh.
Earlier, talking to the reporters, Ambassador Causeret said it would be better for Bangladesh if the elections were arranged soon. "Election is an internal matter of Bangladesh. I should not make any comment. But what I can say about election is that the sooner, the better."
Asked to give his opinion about the BNP stand for deferring the polls, the French ambassador said it was up to the political parties to decide the date of the polls.
