Detained Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina Friday expressed deep concern that she would be denied justice and said if she gets justice, she will be proved innocent, reports UNB.
"The cases against me were politically motivated and baseless…I think I won't get justice. If I get proper justice, I will be proved innocent," Hasina's lawyer Anisul Huq quoted her as saying.
Talking to reporters after meeting Hasina at the special jail in the parliament building complex, Huq said the former prime minister claimed her innocence, but expressed doubt that she would not get justice.
"Hasina finds a huge difference between life in and outside jail, but she is trying to adjust," he said.
Hasina requested the countrymen to pray for early recovery of her ailing husband, Wazed Mia.
Anisul Huq said Hasina applied to the Bangladesh Bank governor seeking to let her know the exact amounts of money held in her bank accounts before submission of her statement on wealth to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC), because all relevant documents were seized from Sudha Sadan during her arrest on July 16 last.
He said they are yet to get copies of chargesheet against Hasina as well as the confessional statements made by the complainant and witnesses.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Motor Chalok Sramik League led by its President Ali Hossain and General Secretary Alauddin Rana offered special prayers at the special jail gate seeking Hasina's early release.
UNB adds: Awami League acting president Zillur Rahman Friday alleged that the caretaker government was not approving party chief Sheikh Hasina's application for appointing lawyers as her power of attorney to fight the extortion case against her.
Talking to reporters at his Gulshan house, Zillur said they would file a writ petition with the High Court Sunday, seeking dismissal of the case against Hasina if the government gives them the signed copy of her power of attorney.
"Although we've applied to jail authorities seeking the signed copy of power of attorney of Sheikh Hasina on July 20, the authorities haven't given it us yet, fearing we may get justice from the High Court," Zillur said.
To conduct a case, he said, a signed copy of the power of attorney is necessary. "So it proves that the case against Sheikh Hasina was fabricated and preplanned," he said.
Zillur accused the government of dilly-dallying and said the government has resorted to this tactic so Awami League cannot file any writ petition in the High Court.
Condemning the government's actions, Zillur demanded that the government approve Hasina's power of attorney as early as possible so they could move to the higher court.
"If the government continues this dillydallying (tactic), we'll be left with no alternatives but to go to the court on this issue," he said adding that receiving the power of attorney is one's fundamental right.
