Acting president of Awami League (AL) Zillur Rahman Monday demanded that his party chief and ex-Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina be set free as he said she won't go into hiding if released, reports UNB.
"To grant bail to Sheikh Hasina is legal and denying bail is illegal…Hasina should be granted bail as she is not going to flee anywhere," he said at a function at his Gulshan residence.
AL president Sheikh Hasina, now detained in a special jail, was shown arrested in an extortion charge on September 19.
Zillur was speaking at a programme where Jubo League, the youth front of the party, distributed cash among the family members of those who were killed and critically injured in the August 21 grenade attacks on an AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue.
Zillur demanded proper investigation into the August 21 grenade attack and exemplary punishment of the godfathers behind the onslaught. He alleged that the previous BNP-Jamaat coalition government didn't take any initiative to find out the real criminals. "Moreover, the previous government tried to suppress the real perpetuators and didn't cooperate with the foreign investigation teams in their inquiry," the AL leader said.
Jubo League's Florida, USA, unit leader Helaluzzaman donated money for the victims of the August 21 grenade attack.
