FE Report
Most of the agricultural lands in 23 districts in the country have freshly been inundated following heavy downpour over the past few days, adversely affecting the newly transplanted Aman and vegetable fields.
The country has now been facing fresh floods due to heavy rainfall and onrush of waters from up-stream after the July-August floods.
Earlier, the floods in July-August period damaged crops worth more than Tk 22 billion in 39 districts.
Sources said about 361,500 hectares of agricultural lands have been inundated.
Sources said agricultural lands in Sherpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Comilla, Serajganj, Sylhet, Jamalpur, Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Sunamganj, Feni, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar have been badly affected by the flood.
Sources said 37,000 hectares of land in Sherpur, 27,000 hectares in Gaibandha, 43,000 hectares in Kurigram, 13,500 hectares in Comilla, 9,500 hectares in Serajganj, 39,500 hectares in Sylhet, 33,000 hectares in Jamalpur, 7,000 hectares in Khagrachhari, 24,000 hectares in Rangamati, 35,000 hectares in Feni, 24,500 hectares of land in Chittagong have been inundated.
However, water levels of the country's major rivers have been rising threatening to inundate more agricultural lands.
Sources at the Water Development Board (WDB) said 20 rivers are still flowing above danger levels.
Sources at the WDB said Monday afternoon that rivers of Brahmaputra basins, Ganges basin and Meghna basin were rising.
Currently, transplanted Aman, popularly known as T-Aman, Aush, seed-beds for the T-Aman and different varieties of vegetable are in the fields.
Sources said fresh inundation of agricultural lands created supply shortfall of the vegetables in the city's kitchen markets and contributed to further rise in their prices.
However, T-Aman plantation on 355,000 hectares of land in 23 districts has been inundated.
