The historic May Day will be observed today (Tuesday) in the country as elsewhere in the world with a renewed pledge to protect the rights of workers, reports UNB.
The day is observed across the world every year since 1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifices of workers at the Hay Market in the United States to establish the rights of eight-hour working day and with a renewed pledge to uphold the rights of working class.
The day is a public holiday.
Different political and labour organisations, particularly the labour wings of political parties, professional bodies and cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the day.
Different departments under Labour and Employment Ministry will bring out a colourful procession from Srama Bhaban at Rajuk avenue at 8.0 am which will be ended at the National Press club after parading different streets. Labour and Employment Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharref Hossain will lead the procession.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the May Day programme at Osmani Memorial auditorium at 10 am. The programme also includes a two-day fair where 42 organisations will participate.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate on-line trade union registration and factory registration and licence taking system of Labour and Employment Ministry at Osmani auditorium.
City streets will be decorated with banners and festoons with slogans of May Day.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages greeted the working class people of the country and wished their overall welfare.
Zillur Rahman said protecting workers' interest, creating good working environment for them and improving workers-owners relations are necessary for industrialisation and socio-economic development of the country.
