FE Report
Law enforcers arrested the chief coordinator of the banned Islamic militant group Hizbut-Tahrir Bangladesh chapter from his Green Road residence Tuesday.
The police also secured a three-day remand for grilling him in connection with a case against him for possessing explosives.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Walid Hossain said they picked up Mahiuddin Ahmed, also a former associate professor of the Institute of Business Administration of Dhaka University, on charge of instigating subversive activities in the city.
The police arrested Ahmed, a spokesman of the outlawed group, immediately after filing two cases against him-- one for possessing explosives and another for his alleged attempt to conduct subversive acts in the capital -- with the Uttara police station.
Uttara police filed a case under the Explosive Act following the arrest of three Hizbut-Tahrir activists who have been picked up along with two petrol bombs and party leaflets on Saturday.
"Ahmed was shown arrest in the cases," the ADC said.
Later, the police produced the kingpin of the banned group before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate's court with a prayer for a seven-day police remand but the chief metropolitan magistrate, Roksana Begum Happy, granted three days for quizzing.
Meanwhile, members of the banned outfit demonstrated out side the press club in the city Tuesday and demanded immediate and unconditional release of their leader.
The government banned Hizbut-Tahrir last October stating that it poses threat to public security.
Following the ban authorities of Dhaka University sent Ahmed into forced retirement.
A number of countries, including Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey had earlier banned the organisation for its involvement in acts of terrorism.
