The holy Shab-e-Barat or the night of fortune was observed across the country Wednesday night with due religious fervour, reports UNB.
Muslim devotees spent the night on prayer mats reciting the holy Quran and saying special prayers in mosques and homes, seeking divine blessings for peace and happiness for themselves and for the Muslim Ummah.
They visited the graveyards of their relatives and Muslim saints and distributed sweets and homemade foods among the poor, their neighbours, friends and relatives.
On the occasion, Islamic Foundation and other religious and socio-cultural organisations held Qurankhwani, milad mahfils and discussion meetings.
Bangladesh Television (BTV), Bangladesh Betar and private TV channels aired special programmes highlighting the significance of the night.
President Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed issued separate messages on the occasion.
In his message, the President termed Islam a religion of peace and harmony and said its ideals are to ensure overall welfare of the mankind here and hereafter and make the world an abode of peace.
Fakhruddin Ahmed, in his message, said there is a special significance of Shab-e-Barat in our national life as it carries the message of joy of the much-desired arrival of holy Ramadan."
