Laptops produced by Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) will be available in the local market within the next six months at a price of Tk 10-11,000, according to Post and Telecommunication Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, reports UNB.
The minister revealed this while addressing the inaugural session of the IT Fair 2010 in the city Tuesday. North South University Wireless Forum hosted the fair.
Speaking as the chief guest, Raju told his audience that the government would set up a telecommunications university in Gazipur to ensure the development of the country's IT sector.
The telecommunication minister pledged that internet broadband charges would gradually be brought down for the country's students, in order to ensure easy access to internet for them. "No region of the country will remain out of optical fiber connectivity."
He urged the IT-based universities to come forward for the development of the country's IT (information technology) sector.
"The day is not so far when Bangladesh will turn into a model for Asia through developing its telecommunications sector," he said.
Vice Chancellor of NSU Dr Hafiz GA Siddiqi and Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Maj Gen (retd) Zia Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
