The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will place a proposal on introduction of incentives for the taxmen to gear up revenue collection.
Taxmen will get incentive at a rate of 10 per cent over the amount in excess of the target, the NBR chairman Badiur Rahman told the FE.
"We will send a proposal on the incentive to the finance ministry for its approval to encourage the taxmen," he said.
The board is now preparing the proposal and it will be sent later this month, he added.
Terming the step as revolutionary, he said: "The government is taking the measure to thwart illegal practice of the taxmen as well as achieve the tax revenue target of Tk 438.50 billion set for the current fiscal."
The NBR chief appears confident about achieving the revenue target for the current fiscal as the board has taken some effective steps. The NBR has also decided to introduce rewards and arrange international trainings for young taxmen, he said.
He said the taxmen should keep trying to inculcate a tax culture among the people without scaring them.
"We should ensure delivery of service, avoid discrimination and cut discretionary power of taxmen," he added.
The NBR chief said the government has cut the auditing power of taxmen in the current fiscal budget.
If a taxman finds any case of tax evasion, he has to submit necessary supporting documents to the Board for taking further action after proper scrutiny, he added.
The government has also simplified the tax return form for the convenience of the tax payers, he said.
The tax revenue target was set at Tk 410.55 billion in the original budget for the fiscal 2006-07, which was revised to Tk 374.79 billion.
In fiscal 2006-07, the tax revenue collection was worth Tk 371.41 billion.
