FE Report
The government imposed curfew in the capital Dhaka and five divisional headquarters for an indefinite period from 8pm Wednesday to defuse the nationwide violent protests that left one person dead and over several hundred injured.
The government closed all universities, including Dhaka University, and colleges at divisional headquarters sine die. Students of all residential halls of all universities were asked to vacate their halls before 8pm Wednesday.
However, the female students were allowed to stay in their dormitories Wednesday night.
The government through a handout Wednesday appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and discipline and refrain from destructive activities.
The government, however, warned it would go for tougher action against the persons found responsible for such unlawful activities in order to protect life and property of the people.
"If these unlawful acts continues, the government will be compelled to take stern actions against the perpetrators for bringing back normalcy and protecting life and property of citizens," said the handout issued by the Press Information Department.
It said as per the demands of Dhaka University (DU) students, the army camp from the university playground has already been withdrawn.
Formation of a judicial committee headed by a retired High Court judge has also been initiated to investigate into the untoward incidents that took place last Monday at the DU campus, the handout mentioned.
Besides, actions against those responsible will also be taken on the basis of the army inquiry committee report, the press note added.
"Despite these measures, a section of people are engaged in causing damage to public and private properties in Dhaka and some other places of the country," it said.
The handout maintained: "It has been observed that non-students are taking part in these rowdy and anarchic acts. These cannot be allowed to be continue."
