A number of Islamic parties called a countrywide hartal for Sunday as the government had "failed" to arrest recently-sacked minister Abdul Latif Siddique by October 22 deadline for his sacrilegious remarks.
On October 01, Sammilito Islami Dalsamuho had given the government 15 days to arrest Siddique but later it extended the timeline till October 22.
"But the government did not pay heed to our demand by the deadline. That's why we are enforcing countrywide hartal Sunday," Zafrullah Khan, secretary- general of the alliance, said at a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka Wednesday.
Zafrullah, in a written statement, threatened to go for a nonstop movement if it created any obstacle during the dawn-to-dusk general strike, on the first working day of the week after a two-day weekend.
