NARAYANGANJ, Oct 30 (Agencies): Unofficial results of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election show that Mayor candidate Selina Hayat Ivy of Awami League is leading with huge majority over her nearest rival Shamim Osman who was backed by AL central leaders.
Until our going to press at 10-33 in 132 centres out of 163, Ivy polled 1,50,319 votes while Shamim got 59,900 votes.
Earlier report adds: Long before the official results, Ivy claimed victory in her race for Narayanganj mayor.
The Awami League's renegade candidate claimed victory based on the early results of 20 centres out of the 163, which put her ahead by about 20,000 votes, announced up until 8.43pm.
This victory was against extortionists and land-grabbers, Ivy told the press around 7:45pm Sunday barely four hours after the polls closed.
Ivy's main rival, ruling Awami League-backed Shamim Osman got 6,268 votes in the 20 centres where Ivy polled 26,505 votes. The city council has just over 400,000 voters.
Happily putting up her index and middle finger in a 'V', Ivy said, "I knew it. I have won, because the people are with me." Ivy, who was wearing a pink sari, looked confident and pleased.
