The government says it has reservation about one of the six firms short-listed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for submission of technical proposal on detailed design of the Padma Bridge, sources said.
The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Authority (JMBA), which has been assigned to supervise the bridge project, said Chungshuk Engineering Co. LTD of South Korea fails to meet major criteria and lacks international experience.
The JMBA has recommended the ADB to review the position of Chungshuk Engineering although it has found five other firms well-compliant, sources added.
The compliant consultancy firms are: T.Y. Lin International Group Ltd., USA, Ove Arup & Partners International Ltd. (ARUP) in joint venture with Schlaich Bergermann UND Partner (SBP) and Consulting Engineering Service (CES), Hong Kong and High-Point Rendel (H-PR) in joint venture with Royal Haskoning and BCL Associates Ltd.
Nippon KOEI Co Ltd in joint venture with Pacific Consultants International, COWI A/S, DHI, BELLER Consult GMBH and Development Design Consultant Limited and Maunsell Ltd, Aecom of New Zealand are the two other firms.
The ADB, willing to be the lead lending agency to finance the construction of the Tk 101.618 billion bridge, has committed to provide more than US$ 17.0 million to carry out the detailed design.
As per condition, the government will sign a deal after the ADB selects a firm for the job.
Work on the design of the bridge is expected to start in the current fiscal.
