FE Report
A meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on communication ministry ended inclusively Thursday over conflicting stand taken by home and communications on the issue of withdrawal of old vehicles from the city's streets.
Sources said the meeting that lasted about three hours could not come into an agreement whether to withdraw 15 years old vehicles or 20 years old ones as two orders given by the home and communication ministries contradicted each other.
Since the city's traffic jam has turned worse with the advent of the Ramadan month, the home ministry issued an instruction to withdraw 15 years old vehicles while the communication ministry wanted the 20 years old vehicles to go off the street.
Committee chairman Sheikh Mojibur Rahman postponed the meeting just before the iftar time and conveyed it again on September 2 to continue the discussion on the issue.
Currently, the mobile courts have been verifying documents of different transports, but they have refrained from seizing the old vehicles as the issue has not been settled.
The committee on the communication ministry convened its 6th meeting inviting its all 10 members and relevant authorities to discuss the city's traffic jam, which was on top of agenda, and other issues.
The sources said the meeting began with the submission of a report on the Dhaka city's deteriorating traffic jam. It discussed performance of the mobile court, timing of schools, offices and train movements.
"Disagreement arose when the issue of the age of the vehicles came up for discussion," said an official attended the meeting.
The meeting had, however, other agenda including recovery of railway's occupied land and Asian highway, but they were not discussed for lack of time.
