Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Wednesday passed the National Identity Registration Bill 2010, fixing the validity of an ID card for 15 years from the date of issuance and providing for strict punitive measures for its abuse. The new law empowers the Election Commission (EC) to carry out all activities regarding registration and issuance of the identity cards. All other government departments and individuals would assist the commission in completing its tasks. Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed piloted the Bill, which was adopted on voice vote.
