A large amount of cash, FDR documents, liquor and firearms were seized by RAB members during a raid at Juba League leader GK Shamim's (sitting) Niketan residence in the city on Friday — Focus Bangla

Law enforcement people on Friday nabbed a Jubo League leader with a cash of Tk 18 million and documents of fixed deposits worth Tk 1.65 billion in a stepped-up crackdown on ruling party rogues.

Foreign liquors, weapons and firearms were also found from the office of the Jubo League central committee leader and contractor SM Golam Kibria Shamim, also known as Tender Shamim.

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested seven bodyguards of Shamim from his company, known as GKB & Company Pvt Limited, located at Niketon in the city.

As part of the ongoing clampdown against extortionists, illegal casino operators and tender manipulators, a team of RAB-1 conducted the drive at Shamim's firm at about noon after detaining him.

The RAB team led by its executive magistrate Sarwar Alam went to the business house no-144 in the area and got flabbergasted to find wads of local currency.

Talking to reporters, Mr Alam said his team members arrested Shamim along with his seven security personnel on the allegations of extortion and tender manipulation.

"We found Tk 1.8 million in cash and FDR documents worth 1.65 billion from this office," he said.

Of the total deposits, a sum of Tk 1.40 billion is shown under his mother's name while the rest is shown under his name, the magistrate said.

"We also seized foreign liquors and firearms with ammunition from. We need to verify whether the firearms recovered have licences or not," he said.

He alleged that the firearms were used for extortion and tender manipulation purposes.

"We suspect the seized money to be ill-gotten. We'll investigate the source of the money," the Rab executive magistrate said.

Later, Shamim was taken to the Rab office for interrogation.

Shamim is known as an influential contractor in the neighbourhoods of Sabujbagh, Basabo and Motijheel and bagged development contracts of the Public Works Department.

Shamim, son of one Afsar Uddin Master from Narayanganj, lives at Banani DOHS and was reported to have employed six armed bodyguards for his safety.

Meanwhile, the Awami Jubo League, the youth front of the ruling Awami League, has expelled its leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, two days after his arrest over his the illegal casino business inside a Dhaka club.

In another drive, the elite force busted the Kalabagan Krira Chakra (sports circle) Club in city's upmarket Dhanmondi area on the day.

During the crackdown, the Rab arrested five persons including club president Shafiqul Alam Feroz and seized pistols, bullets, unauthorised stimulating drug yaba and playing cards.

The Rab had earlier detained club president Shafiqul Alam Feroz, a member of the central executive committee of the Krishak League, Rab-2 commanding officer Lt Col Ashique Billah told reporters.

Rab personnel, led by Gausul Azam, executive magistrate of Rab headquarters, raided the club later in the evening.

Ashique Billah told reporters that they detained Firoz from the club around 1:30pm.

Rab people citing intelligence reports said the club has been operating an illegal casino.
