The Appellate Divison of the Supreme Court rejected on Monday death-row war crimes convict Mohammad Kamaruzzaman's review plea upholding the previous death sentence awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2), report agencies.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order against the Jamaat-e-Islami leader.
The party has called a 48-hour countrywide hartal from today (Tuesday) protesting the Supreme Court's rejection of the review petition.
Jamaat-e-Islami acting ameer Makbul Ahmad announced the shutdown in a press statement on Monday.
The shutdown will begin at 6:00 am today and will end at 6:00 am on Thursday.
An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the party, was killed and another injured with bullets during a clash with police over the court verdict on the Cinema Hall Road in Maijdee area of the district town on Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as Omar Faruk of Kazirhanif village in Sadar upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Sudharam Model Police Station Anwar Hossain said a group of Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a sudden procession in the area around 10:45 am protesting the Supreme Court's rejection of the review petition.
At one stage, the Jamaat-Shibir men opened fire targeting the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate that left Shibir activist Rakib injured. Later he died at the Noakhali General Hospital.
However, the issue of the Jamaat-e-Islami leader's seeking presidential clemency could not been sorted out as the copy of the verdict was yet to reach the jail authorities.
Asked about preparations to carry out the sentence, Law Minister Anisul Huq said: "What can I do if the order has not reached [jail]?
"The order has to go there. How can he (Kamaruzzaman) be hanged otherwise?"
But the jail authorities were ready for the hanging, he said.
The Al-Badr leader was sentenced to death by a special tribunal in 2013 for Liberation War time atrocities.
