Beleaguered BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Thursday urged her party faithful to remain united against any "conspiracy" to harm the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, reports UNB.
"BNP is the largest democratic party. I have asked party leaders and workers to remain united against any conspiracy… Inshallah, BNP stands united," she told reporters after offering fateha at the late President Ziaur Rahman's mazar in the afternoon.
She said many of her party leaders have their individual reform proposals and all want to speak on those proposals. For that, she said, it is not possible to complete the council in a one-day session-it would take three to seven days.
Asked about her previous remarks on BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan's behind-the-scenes activities, the party chair once again said he must act in accordance with the party constitution.
"I also want reforms, party workers want reforms, too, but all these proposals must be placed before the party council or the chairperson must be consulted about the proposals," Khaleda told the reporters.
She said none can do reform all on a sudden. There is party constitution, and if it is not followed, it becomes "tantamount to violation of the party constitution".
At this stage, police allegedly applied force to restrain media men from covering the outdoor event, as there have been restrictions under the emergency rules. This led to a scuffle between the policemen and the journalists, resulting in injuries to several journalists.
Demanding the lifting of the ban on indoor politics, Khaleda said she wants to enter her party office to organize BNP council session for discussing party-reform proposals and adopting final decisions.
She made the plea as a lineup of her party stalwarts moved for reform of the BNP under a political reform drive launched in the interim period under the caretaker regime, apparently leaving her aside.
"It needs some time to complete the process of convening the party council, and for that, I need to go to the party office to complete the council preparation," she said.
Khaleda said there are about 4,000 councilors of BNP and all would have to attend the council for discussion.
