The campaign for the upcoming city corporation polls reached its new height as BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia started campaigning on Saturday for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral candidate Tabith Awal.
Khaleda Zia began campaigning for Tabith Awal at the Pink City shopping mall of Gulshan-2 in the city at about 4:30 pm on the day.
The much-hyped DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls will be held on April 28.
She distributed leaflets to shopkeepers and pedestrians and called upon them to cast their votes for Tabith.
"You (voters) elect Tabith by casting votes for the election symbol bus," she said.
The BNP chairperson then went to the DCC Market at Gulshan-1. She also campaigned for Tabith on the ground floor of the market.
Upon hearing the news, people and party leaders of the areas gathered there. They chanted slogans in favour of Khaleda Zia and Tabith Awal's election symbol. BNP vice-chairman Selima Rahman and some members of the Mohila Dal and a BNP-blessed councillor aspirant from Ward-20, among others, accompanied Khaleda Zia.
The BNP chairperson without any prior declaration hit the campaign trail.
Earlier convener of the Adorsho Dhaka Andolon Dr Emajuddin Ahmed hinted that Begum Zia would take part in the city corporation polls campaign.
On the first day of Bangla New Year she came to the party's central office and sought votes for Mirza Abbas and Tabith Awal. Tabith Awal and Afroza Abbas, wife of Mirza Abbas, among others, were present on April 14 last.
BNP and 20-party-backed mayoral candidate for DNCC, Tabith Awal said on the day that the leaders and activists of his party were falling victims to abduction, killing, attacks and cases by the ruling class.
"I (Tabith) also could not say many things in fear of abduction," he told the journalists while making his campaign at Borobazar at Gabtali in the city.
He demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the molestation of women on the first day of Bangla new year on the Dhaka University campus.
Afroza Abbas on the 12th day of campaign sought votes for her husband Mirza Abbas on the day. "The government fears the popularity of Mirza Abbas. We hope he will soon join in the election campaign by availing bail from the court," she said.
She alleged that the party leaders and activities were being intimidated by the ruling party men and posters of BNP backed mayoral and councilor candidates were burnt by them and they vandalised makeshift election offices.
