Detained former premier and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia took a stand that she would not register as a voter since she has been arrested and detained 'illegally' in the special jail in the parliament compound, reports UNB.
Emerging from the temporary jail Thursday, her lawyer Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan communicated to reporters that Khaleda Zia said the government detained her illegally and that she would not become a voter in protest.
The jail authorities had gone there with voter-registration forms twice for enrolling her as a voter, but she refused to register.
Another former PM, Sheikh Hasina, also detained in another special jail nearby, has become a voter from Dhanmondi area.
Ahmed Azam said the BNP chairperson termed the spiralling prices of essentials a 'great crisis' for the nation.
The immediate-past PM suggested that the caretaker government discuss with the detained politicians through roundtable after releasing them and take initiatives to tackle such a tough situation applying experiences of those politicians.
