Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed alleged on Friday that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia had violated the electoral code of conduct by participating in a campaign on behalf of her party-backed candidates in the city corporation polls, reports BSS.

"Begum Khaleda Zia is campaigning for her party candidate under police protocol, which is a violation of the election code of conduct as she is doing this taking government facilities," he said.

Tofail Ahmed, also a member of the Awami League's advisory council, made the allegation against the BNP chief while replying to a query from a journalist after placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at 32, Dhanmondi marking the historic Mujibnagar Day.

The senior Awami League leader called upon the people to stand united against all sorts of terrorism as he said the city corporation elections would be held in a free and fair atmosphere. "The law enforcers would take stern actions against those trying to create anarchy and foil the polls," he warned.

He also said that the people would give a befitting reply through their votes to Begum Zia's terrorist activities during the three city corporation elections.
