CHITTAGONG, July 27: Five people, including two children, were killed in a landslide in Cox's Bazar district in the early hours on Monday.
Cox's Bazar fire service officials said the incidents occurred amid an eviction drive, launched by the district administration and police at local hill slopes.
The deceased are - Junu Begum (28), wife of Khairul Islam, and their seven-year-old child Niha Moni (7), Shah Alam (45), his wife Rokeya Aktar (33), and their daughter Rina Aktar (9).
Two other people - Shah Alam (28) and Nurun Nabi (22) - were injured in the incident. They are undergoing medical treatment in a local hospital.
The officials also said due to incessant rainfall hill slopes at south Baharchhara in the district collapsed on four houses at around 2.00 am on Monday, killing the victims.
Fire-fighters from Cox's Bazar and Pekua units as well as army personnel rushed to the spot. They rescued the injured, and got them admitted to the hospital.
Acting deputy commissioner (DC) of Cox's Bazar Dr. Anupam Sen, civil surgeon Kamar Uddin, additional police super Tofael Ahmed and Sadar police station OC Matiur Rahman visited the spot.
The DC said they started evicting families from the local hill slopes from Sunday. Amid the eviction drive, the landslide killed five people.
