Launch sinks in Meghna with 200 aboard

MUNSHIGANJ, May 15 (UNB): Eight bodies were recovered from the Meghna River in Gozaria upazila here Thursday afternoon after a launch carrying over 200 passengers capsized amid bad weather.

Coast Guard members pulled out the twelve bodies from the river soon after the accident.

Three of the deceased were identified as Mamal Hossain (50) of Naria upazila of Shariatpur district, Tumpa Begum (30) and Setar Begum (50).

Deputy Commissioner of Munshiganj Saiful Hasan said salvage ships 'Durbar' and 'Pratya' started from Narayanganj to join the rescue operation.

The launch, 'MV Miraj-4' carrying over 200 passengers capsized near Gozaria Launch Ghat in the Meghna River in the district Thursday afternoon while it was heading towards Sureshwar.
