Life expectancy at both birth and population growth rates in Bangladesh has fallen in the latest count, official statistics showed on Tuesday.
The average life expectancy rate of each of the population has slightly dropped to 72.3 years in 2023 from that of 72.4 years in 2022, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data.
The annual population growth rate has significantly fallen to 0.69 per cent in 2023 from that of 0.98 per cent in 2022 and of 1.13 per cent in 2021, the SVRS report of the BBS shows.
Meanwhile, the dependency ratio of the population to their family has been increasing over the last couple of years.
The dependency ratio has boosted to 53.7 per cent in 2023 from that of the 52.3 per cent a year ago in 2022 and 50.2 per cent in 2021, the BBS data showed.
Bangladesh's 77.88 per cent population at the age of 7.0 years and above is literate, the official count said. A year ago, the literacy rate was reported at 76.8 per cent.
According to the BBS, the male-female sex ratio has also been dropped to 96.3 in 2023 from that of 97.5 in 2022. The ratio was higher in the previous years, including 98.1 in 2021 and 100.2 in 2020.
Among other social sector indicators, many are showing a bad news for the country as the death rate, child mortality rate, and neo-natal mortalities have been increased over the year.
Bangladesh's crude death rate has increased to 6.1 per thousand population in 2023 from that of 5.8 per thousand in 2022, the BBS data show.
The infant mortality rate has also increased to 27 per 1,000 live births in 2023 from that of 24 per thousand in 2022.
The under-5 mortality rate has also been recorded at 33 per cent in 2023 while 31 per cent in 2022, the report said.
