Liton wins in RCC polls, Anwaruzzaman in SCC

Awami League-backed mayoral candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has won the Rajshahi City Corporation election with a huge margin while Awami League-nominated mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury won the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election, reports UNB.

The incumbent mayor bagged 160,290 votes in the election defeating his nearest rival Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Md Murshid Alam by a whopping 146,807 votes, according to unofficial results.

Rajshahi City Corporation elections Returning Officer Delowar Hossain announced the results after counting of votes ended at all 155 polling centres.

Murshid Alam, the Islami Andolon candidate with "handfan" symbol got 13,483 votes. He rejected the results.

Among other candidates, Saiful Islam Swapan from the Jatiya Party got 10,272 votes and Jaker Party's Latif Anwar bagged 11,713 votes.

Meanwhile, Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury won the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election by defeating Jatiya Party candidate Nazrul Islam Babu with a margin of over 68,000 votes on Wednesday.

Returning Officer Faisal Kadir announced the results of the SCC elections at Jalalabad Gas Auditorium in Sylhet city on Wednesday after the vote counting ended.

Mayor-elect Anwaruzzaman bagged 1, 18, 614 votes while his nearest rival Babu got only 50, 321 votes in the race, putting a difference of 68, 293 votes.

On the other hand, Babu rejected the results soon after it was announced by the returning officer, said the party's Sylhet metropolitan chapter member secretary Abdus Shaheed Laskar Bashir.

BSS adds: Voter turnout was around 52-55 per cent in Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) election while it was around 46 per cent in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said earlier.
