Mahbub Jamil, an eminent business and cultural personality and former special assistant to the chief adviser of a caretaker government, died on Wednesday.
He breathed his last at the age of 83 at Evercare Hospital in the city at around 2:40 am after suffering from old-age complications, according to the family members.
He was admitted to the hospital on Oct 26.
Mr Jamil's first namaz-e-janaza was held at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Zohr prayers. Later, he was buried at the Banani graveyard.
He left behind a son, a daughter, relatives, friends and many well-wishers.
Mr Mahbub served the Singer Bangladesh Limited as the managing director for about 24 years from 1987 to 2009. He also continued as the Chairman of the Singer's Board until April, 2015.
In January, 2008, Mr Jamil was appointed a special assistant to the chief advisor of the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed, with the rank of a minister. He was in-charge of the ministries of industries, civil aviation & tourism and youth & sports.
He also served as President of Foreign Investors' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), President of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), a board member of the International Chamber of Commerce Bangladesh (ICCB) and member of the Academic Council of BRAC University, etc.
He was also the chairman of International Leasing and Financial Services Ltd (ILFSL), member of the Board of Trustees of Bishwa Sahitya Kendra, and a jury of Bangladesh Film Censor Board and the National Film Award Selection Committee.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Singer Bangladesh said, "Mr Mahbub Jamil has long been identified as the face of Singer Bangladesh and his departure is a great loss for the business community, cultural community and intellectual society of the country."
"His lifelong contribution will remain unparallel and the void of his absence will remain unfulfilled," the company said adding: Singer family expresses its heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and pray to the Almighty for granting him Jannatul Ferdous.
