The metropolitan sessions judge's court Tuesday sentenced controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun to ten years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition, reports UNB.
"The arms in question had not been used in committing any criminal offence. So, he may be awarded the minimum punishment," observed judge Abul Bashar while pronouncing the verdict in the afternoon.
Judgement in a graft case against former state minister Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin and his son will be delivered today (Wednesday).
Joint forces arrested Mamun, a close associate of Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on March 26. A foreign made sophisticated Spanish pistol and eight rounds of ammunition were seized from his Banani DOHS residence.
Sub-inspector Abdul Awal of Cantonment thana prosecuted Mamun under section 19(a) of the Arms Act.
The verdict came after examining 26 prosecution witnesses and records.
Earlier on June 7, Mamun was awarded three years imprisonment by a special court trying bigwig corrupt suspects for non-submission of his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission within the given time.
Mamun faces at least half a dozen more criminal cases.
Meanwhile, Judge AK Roy of the makeshift special judge's court set up at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban for trying high-profile corruption suspects is going to pronounce the judgement against Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, as decided by his court on conclusion of the case proceedings.
Both father and son, already in custody, are accused of possessing huge wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.
Nasir, along with his son Barrister Mir Helal Uddin, amassed over Tk 300 million, a staggering figure disproportionate to their known sources of income, as stated in the case forwarded by the Anti-Corruption Commission under the current drive against pervasive corruption.
Helal was charged with transferring over Tk 56.4 million from joint accounts with different banks after his father's arrest on February 5 by the army-led joint forces.
Helal, arrested on February 22, was also accused of aiding and abetting his politician-father in piling up the wealth.
Another report adds, a Dhaka court Tuesday sent former state minister for power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku's wife Romana Mahmud and their daughter Sara Hasin Mahmud and son Abed Hasan Mahmud in a corruption case.
Police Tuesday arrested Romana and Sara Hasin after an arrest warrant against them in a corruption case with Mohammadpur Police Station.
Later in the day, Abed Hasan turned himself in to court. After a hearing, the court ordered the three to jail.
