Manjur bags orange, Nasir elephant

CHITTAGONG, Apr 10: Returning Officer Md Abdul Baten has allotted symbols for candidates running for mayor, ward councillor and woman ward councillor in reserved seats in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election to be held on April 28.
The returning officer allotted the symbols at the Chittagong Muslim Institute in the city from 9:00 am today.
Earlier, 55 candidates withdrew their candidature on the last day of withdrawal and finally 12 candidates are vying for the mayoral post, 212 candidates are running for councillor posts and 61 are in the fray for the reserved posts for women councillors.
Former CCC mayor M Manjur Alam will contest the election with the symbol 'orange' and his arch-rival AJM Nasir will contest it with 'elephant' as his symbol. Nasir is backed by the 14-party alliance led by Awami League and Manjur is backed by BNP and its allies.
Jatiya Party (Ershad)-backed Solaiman Alam Seth has been allotted the symbol of 'dish antenna' while Bangladesh National Front (BNF)-backed candidate Arif Moinuddin will contest with the 'bus' symbol for the mayor's post.
Mujibul Haque Sukkur, backed by Islamic Front, will contest with 'peacock' and general secretary of Islami Front Moulana M A Matin will contest with 'spindle'.
Owaiz Hossain Bhuiyan of Islami Andolan will vie for the mayoral post with 'table clock', Shafiul Alam of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal with 'Hilsa fish', Gazi Md Alauddin with 'telescope', Syed Sajjad Zoha with 'cricket bat', Saifuddin Ahmed Robi with 'flask' and Abul Kalam Azad with 'match-box'.
