NEW DELHI, May 17: Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has tendered his resignation to the President of India Pranab Mukherjee while the newly-elected parliamentarians of the BJP have decided to meet on May 20 to choose their leader before forming the next government, agencies.
The BJP recorded a landslide victory in the final tally of the Indian Lok Shabha election results that show the Congress may not get the main opposition party status in the parliament. Congress is just short of 10 per cent of the 543 directly-elected seats in the Lok Sabha. So, the Congress leader in the House will be denied as the leader of the opposition.
However, Manmohan Singh has requested the president to dissolve the 15th Lok Sabha. President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted his resignation to pave way for the formation of new government led by Narendra Modi, who led his party BJP to a thumping majority in the crucial polls.
As per the norm, the President has asked Dr Singh to continue as the caretaker PM till the new government takes charge. In a rare gesture, President Pranab also came out to see Dr Singh off at the gates of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
