The historic March 7, a red- letter day in the history of the Bangalees' long arduous freedom struggle, was observed on Friday paying glowing tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, reports BSS.
On this day in 1971, the undisputed leader of the Bangalees Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his epoch-making speech of independence at the then Race Course Maidan, now Suhrawardy Udyan, in Dhaka.
In the morning, Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the city.
After placing wreath, the Prime Minister stood there in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of respect to the undisputed leader of the country's independence.
Later, Sheikh Hasina along with Awami League stalwarts placed another wreath there on behalf of the ruling party.
Awami League (AL) presidium member and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, party advisory council members Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, presidium members Obaidul Quader and Advocate Sahara Khatun, joint general secretary Mahbub- ul- Alam Hanif, publicity secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, Prime Minister's adviser Toufique-e-Elahi Chowdhury and state minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were present, among others.
Different political parties, social, cultural and professional bodies observed the day with elaborate programmes.
Leaders of Dhaka City AL, Awami Juba League, Awami Swechasebak League, Jatiya Sramik League, Mahila AL, Juba Mahila League, Krishak League, Chhatra League and other social, cultural and professional bodies also placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu there marking the day.
Awami Juba League organised a discussion at its central office at Bangabandhu Avenue while Bangabandhu Parishad held another discussion at its central office at Bashiruddin Road at Kalabagan.
In the afternoon, the ruling party also organised a public rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan from where Bangabandhu delivered his epoch-making speech of independence on the day in 1971.
Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the huge public rally as the chief guest. Party presidium member and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury chaired it.
The national hook-ups-Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television-as well as private television channels and radio stations aired special programmes while national dailies published special supplements marking the day.
Since early Friday, the recorded March 7 speech of
Bangabandhu was played through amplifiers at the unit offices of AL and its associate bodies throughout the capital.
