Marco Rubio congratulates BNP, Tarique

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), its chairman Tarique Rahman, and the people of Bangladesh following the party-led alliance's landslide victory in the 13th national parliamentary election.
Like several other world leaders, Mr Rubio shared the message on the social media platform X, writing: "Congratulations to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), party leader Tarique Rahman, and the people of Bangladesh."
The United States also underscored the importance of bilateral ties with the incoming administration, saying it looks forward to engaging with Bangladesh's newly elected government to advance regional prosperity, stability and security.
The message came amid a wave of international acknowledgements after the BNP-led alliance secured a decisive win in Thursday's polls, alongside the official declaration of results for 297 parliamentary constituencies by Bangladesh Election Commission (EC).
According to the results, the BNP and its allies won 212 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies secured 77 seats. Islami Andolon Bangladesh won one seat, and independent candidates captured seven seats.
The UK High Commission in Dhaka also congratulated Mr Rahman and the people of Bangladesh, describing the outcome as the beginning of a "new chapter" and expressing willingness to work with the new government on shared priorities, including economic growth, migration, climate action and security cooperation.
Meanwhile, international observers from the European Union described the polls as "credible and competently managed," marking a contrast with previous contentious election cycles.
