Matlub\\\'s panel sweeps apex trade body polls

Chairman of Nitol-Niloy Group Abdul Matlub Ahmad is poised to be next chief of the country's apex trade body as his panel made a clean sweep at the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) polls.
The Babsayee Unnayan Parishad (BUP) led by Mr Ahmad won majority of the seats of director in the biennial election (2015-17), according to the voting results unveiled Sunday.
Voting for elections to the board of directors of the FBCCI was held Saturday at the Federation Bhaban in the city amid great enthusiasm and festivity.
The BUP won 12 of the 16 seats of director from the chamber group and 13 of the 16 seats from the association group represented in the federative body of businesspeople of the country.
Swadhinata Babsayee Parishad (SBP) led by current first vice-president of the FBCCI and president of Chittagong Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry Monowara Hakim Ali got the remaining four other seats for the chamber group.
A third panel styled Babsayee Oikya Parishad (BOP), led by Syed Moazzem Hossain, Dr Kazi Erteza Hassan and Md Shafquat Haider Chowdhury, won three seats in the association group.
Chairman of the FBCCI Election Board Md Ali Ashraf MP announced the poll results. Now ten special chambers and 10 special associations will nominate 20 directors.
The newly elected directors will vote today (Monday) to elect the president, the first vice-president and the vice-president of the FBCCI.   
This time around, the posts of president and vice-president will go to the chamber group while the association group will get the first vice-president for the 2015-17 term.
Mr Matlub Ahmad has already been nominated by Rajshahi chamber and obtained unanimous support of its directors. "He is going to be FBCCI president for the next two years," said most of the directors-elect.  
He needs 27 of the 52 votes today (Monday) to be elected as president. Monowara Hakim Ali is the other candidate for the FBCCI president. The new board of directors will be announced on May 28. Thirty-two candidates vied for the 16 seats of director in the association group, while 33 contested for the same number of director seats in the chamber group.
From the 78 chambers in Bangladesh, 418 of a total of 436 members voted in Saturday's balloting to elect the business community's leaders. There were 1,764 voters from the 355 associations. Of them, 1,533 cast their votes.
Anisul Haque Shamim got the highest 335 votes of the chamber group. He contested the election from BUP. There were 32 candidates from chamber group.
Mr Ashraf said 32 candidates had contested from chamber group. Out of them, Dilip Kumar Agarwal got 318 votes while Gazi Golam Ashria 312, Sheikh Fazle Fahim 296, Nizamuddin 295, Monowara Hakim Ali 293, Probir Kumar Saha 285, Nurul Huda Mukut 264, Hasina Newaz 255, Nagibul Islam Dipu 249, Masud Parvez Khan Imran 246, Bazlur Rahman 240, Mohammad Anwar Sadat Sarcar 239, Tabarakul Tosaddek Hossain Khan Titu 233 and Rezaul Karim Renzu 213.     
Four candidates have been elected from Swadhinata Babsayee Parishad led by Monowara Hakim Ali.
Out of the above-mentioned 15 candidates, Monowara Hakim Ali, Masud Parvez Khan and Tabarakul Tosaddek Hossain Khan Titu contested from SBP. The rest ran the race from BUP.
Besides, there are 10 chambers and associations from which one representative each will represent as selected directors in the FBCCI executive body.
Kohinoor Islam and Md Masud got the same number of 205 votes for the 16th director post.  They contested the polls from the Monowara Hakim Ali panel.
The chairman of the election board, Mr Ashraf, said, "We will take the decision later as per rules of the election."
